Description

Yay! I've completed one of my projects! So excited. :happybounce:

This is the concubus, my Ao no Exorcist inspired version of the succubus and incubus demons. I combined them in part thanks to information from the Malleus Maleficarum, which suggests that the succubus/incubus are in fact one demon. Even if I hadn't combined them into one dual sexed creature, I would have changed the name, since I hate the connotations of them (succubus means to lie under, and incubus to lie on top of; concubus just means to lie with, but it's an invented term so I don't know if that's the correct way to combine those terms). UPDATE: I did a bit of research, and it seems that I'm not the first to come up with the idea of using 'concubus'  as a term for the succubus/incubus, but using it to refer to a dual sexed creature seems to be unique to me. But since others are calling things concubus/concubi, I feel pretty confident that I am using the latin correctly.

The concubus is a mysterious and dangerous creature, even by the standards of Hell. They are manipulators of desire, both in mortals and spirits. Not just content to be masters of the sexual arts, they are expert infiltrators capable of taking down entire organizations by themselves. Their power lies in knowing exactly what those around them want, and being able to make them think that the concubus can give it to them (whether they can or not). In addition, they can implant or remove desires from their victims, but this requires that they come into frequent contact with their target (the weaker the concubus the closer they have to stay and more often they have to interact). They are aided in this by being able to transform themselves into the kind of person you'd want around--whomever or whatever kind of person that might be. They are so often in a different form in fact that many of the older concubi no longer feel comfortable in their original forms, preferring to imitate an adopted persona instead. The source of their power lies in their eyes; looking into the eyes of a concubus is to guarantee your damnation. The only beings immune to the power of a concubus are other concubi, as such they are the least trusted of all demons (unless their eyes are covered), as you can't be sure if they are manipulating you or not. Though not the most physically strong of demons, most concubi of necessity know how to use some kind of weapon or martial art. If at all possible, though, they will send in enraptured mortals/spirits to fight for them.

Though they have wings, they are very poor flyers (some cannot fly at all), instead relying on their ability to teleport short distances to hasten travel when necessary. A concubi can really appear as any humanoid figure they want, but they tend to favor beautiful, hybrid forms in Hell and beautiful humans (or even angels) on Earth. They are able to detach their snake tails to act as scouts or as a back up plan in case their body is destroyed, as they can reform themselves from either snake as long as it remains intact.

Concubi are the most likely demon to produce hybrid offspring with humans. Such offspring are known as cambions, and though usually quite beautiful, they all possess some kind of gross deformity beyond that normally suffered by half demons (ie the pointy ears and tails). Unlike other demons, they do not leave their offspring to grow up with their human parent. They always come at some point to claim them and take them on as servants. Concubi are also the only demons known to be able to implant a full blooded demon into a human fetus in utero, producing another concubus born with its own vessel. They often do this under the guise of the lover/spouse of their target. It is a way for them to ensure the relative safety of their offspring on Earth, and that it will be cared for without suspicion from the parent (as cambions are a bit more obvious).

Finally, concubi are one of the most difficult demons to exorcise (let alone root out), as they can and will manipulate the exorcist's desire to exorcise them. Finding them is next to impossible--it usually happens because of the strange behavior of those around them if at all.

GODSPAWN fancomic info:

The concubi are a rather recent addition (in demon terms) to the world of Gehenna. No one is really sure where they came from, but they are sure that they infiltrated every aspect of Gehennan society in the blink of an eye. When Satan and his demon kings discovered the extent of their presence (due to their great power), they rooted out as many as they could and forced them to cover their eyes. Those that did not comply fled to Assiah after Satan started burning out their eyes. As such, the vast majority of concubi are found on Assiah (if you find them at all). There they are protected by (and serve) the banished demon lord Asmodeus, a kindred spirit. A few particularly brave ones still remain in Gehenna, using their power to hide in plain sight. Every once in a while one is uncovered, and the punishment is always the conflagration of their eyes. Afterwards, mostly powerless, they are left to fend for themselves against their foul brethren. The fact that they weren't simply destroyed utterly is a testament to their great power--they had so entrenched themselves into the political and social worlds of Gehenna that it would have caused civil war if Satan had simply obliterated them (and though that might have been a bit of fun, it would have been a pain in the ass eventually, and Satan is nothing if not lazy).

Their 'tell' is their tendency to fixate on their own image (not necessarily because of their vanity, sometimes they're just looking for imperfections in their disguises). They will always slow down to have a look, even if they just passed their reflection. For this reason mirrors can be a good defense, as they find them really distracting.

Their motives are unknown, but they all profess to be descendants of a eighth, hidden demon queen that they claim still lives and will one day avenge them and Lilith by overthrowing Satan. Most demons scoff at this idea, as all of the demon queens were created from Lilith and that event (the destruction of Lilith) was witnessed and fully documented, and by all accounts only seven queens were created.

Note: Once again feel free to use this demonic race for fanworks, just run it by me first if you wouldn't mind (of course, don't use this image itself, just the concept) and attribute/link!

I had a really hard time deciding but I think that, at least right now, this is my favourite among your rich lore. Political power is more intriguing than raw physical power and with the abilities of your concubi... yeah they are everything I could ask for. I'm glad to see someone bring up the fact that early succubus/incubus legends claimed they were the same being (it always reminds me of shrimps... and the addition of escaping and reforming through detaching their tails is like a mix of starfish and lizard). It's the kind of creative move that gets me guessing: etymology is a favourite subject of mine. I can imagine that demons speak of concubi as concubi, and that the separation of concubi into incubi and succubi among humans was a misunderstanding: humans like to categorize things and monotheist religions generally don't like the idea of bigendered deities.

I love the history you've given these demons, it's solid enough to feel canonical while at the same time it leaves room for speculation. And something in the thought of a group subjected to persecution never fails to tug my heartstrings that little bit extra. <3 Love the veil, love the design as a whole. I wanted to say that her horns look a little flat where they come out of the skull, then caught myself floundering for a suitable pronoun for this type of demon. :/ That's the only time English lets me down, really. No genderless personal pronouns. We have one in Swedish (hen) but that doesn't work so well in English. x'] But I'm rambling. Sorry!
